Modern Music Turns Into Golden Oldies
I wrote this column during my senior year of high school for the school newspaper. The Internet was just taking off. I couldn't readily check the lyrics to my favorite songs. If so, I would've checked the lyrics for accuracy of "Are You That Somebody?" by Aaliyah, my favorite song at the time. There are some edits needed (through no fault of my own), but it's amazing to look back and reflect on how the world has changed in such a short span of time.
Although we now live in a digital age, writing is still important. My stories matter, your stories matter. If you're just starting out as a writer, write! I know it sounds simple, but sometimes we procrastinate on just getting started. Observe the world around you. Write about what you notice or what you want to change. This column was about my observations of my dad's love for music and also how it impacted my life.

A True Great Grandmother
I wrote this column in high school for my school newspaper. This article was about my great-grandmother. She was 96 years old at the time, but she lived to be almost 104 years old! My great-grandmother and I had a great relationship. I wanted to share some of her story. As a writer, look for stories, even in your own life, that need to be shared with the world. You'll notice that this article doesn't shy away from controversial topics of race and racism in our country. Even as a teenager, I knew the importance of being an authentic writer. You can do the same thing!
